Nothing new for the already responsible dog owner but starting January 1st of 2015 you will have to keep your dog on your terrain always! If your terrain is not fenced in then you must use a kennel or tie your dog with a “looplijn” (running cable). Outside you will have to keep your dog on a leash. A survey done on Aruba has shown that 8 out of 10 dogs on the street actually have an owner and are fed by someone. Addressing these owners is expected to seriously improve the situation of “stray” dogs on Aruba.
This new law replaces the 1955 Dog Act and also contains a section dealing with the well being of dogs. Your four legged friend should always have access to clean drinking water, should be fed daily and offered protection from sun, rain and wind. And if your dog is seriously suffering (e.g from a broken leg, severe dehydration or mange) you must take him to a veterinarian for treatment. By law!
