2011 March: Outbreak of screwworm on Aruba:
After the screwworm eradication from Aruba in 2004 new cases have been diagnosed and confirmed in March of 2011. The government will start a new eradication effort soon using the Sterile Insect Technique used to free de United States of America and Central America from screwworm. The source of this outbreak is unknown.
Why we publish alert messages: It is a well known fact, that publication in newspapers or television broadcasts do not reach the public adequately when there is an emergency. Even in a small community like Aruba. For example: during the 2006 outbreak of canine distemper, a deadly disease for dogs of all ages, a lot of owners were not aware of this and lost their dog unnecessarily. Timely vaccination protects dogs from distemper with near 100% accuracy.
